Ladies and Gentlemen:
Attached you will find the "CT UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM" proposed
bill, written by the CT CALL TO ACTION.
Each day that passes without our State legislators addressing the issue of the
rising numbers of our State's residents who are uninsured, underinsured, or are
being denied access to needed care through our Medicaid programs [HUSKY, SAGA,
CONNPACE, to name a few] places everyone in our State 'at risk'.
1. How many years of compounded increases on insurance premiums must we endure
before people conclude that there must be a better way?
2. How many hospitals must be sold FOR PROFIT or close their doors, because of
low reimbursements and 'free' care at their Emergency Room facilities?
3. How many providers will no longer accept Medicare or Medicaid patients,
because of the low reimbursements?
4. How many people will not get their prescription drugs, because of the rising
costs of these drugs?
5. How many business people, especially small businesses ['Mom & Pop'
entities] will go out of business, trying to provide health insurance for their
employees?
In November a report from the National Academy of Sciences declared that
the U.S. health care system is in crisis. Do we wait until our medical
system crashes and THEN do something?
We have purposely not included funding or re-training in this Proposal, the two
most contentious issues each time the subject of a State Universal Health Care
system arises. BUT, we are prepared to speak to you and discuss these
issues together, since they are very important ones. Indeed, we are
prepared!
We have spent many hours reading proposals written and submitted across our
country. We have written the one that we think is the best for our State!
It has passed the Board of the CT CALL TO ACTION unanimously. Our Board
consists of Medical Providers, retirees, uninsured people, and members of the
American Association of Medical Students {AMSA} from the Yale and UCONN Medical
Schools.
We look forward to meeting with you as soon as possible, so that we may discuss
this together.
Respectfully submitted by:
Naomi E. Shaiken, President
Alfred Shaiken, Vice President
