June 2002 Newsletter

The last month proved that advocates do have a role in setting standards for quality, comprehensive, affordable, and improved universal health care.  The CTCTA has been working with a statewide coalition in providing better benefits for Connpace, SAGA, and Husky members.  We have blocked the Department of Social Service [DSS] from implementing an egregious plan to deny patients of their needed prescriptions. They have to come up with a new plan by June 6th, and we will be there, to be certain that their new plan will help not hinder those in need.  We thank all who have responded in helping us reach out to State Legislators in this effort.

We finally have one Connecticut Congressperson, Rep. Rosa DeLauro, signed on to Rep. John Conyers HR 99, which is to set up a feasible study group for universal health care to be in place by 2004!  This began back in February with a joint letter by CTCTA and CT Older Women’s League sending a letter to all of our federal legislators.  We followed up with many FAXES, phone calls, and further letters.  We thank all of you who helped get someone in Washington motivated enough to join in our effort.

The bus to Canada for lower prescription drugs, sponsored by CT Council of Senior Citizens was a huge success.  More than 30 people saved thousands of dollars in obtaining their medications, through the Council working with the unions who provided the bus, meals and overnight accommodations for them.  All the participants had to pay was for their scripts!  We look forward to another trip in the fall of this year.  Another option for those who cannot travel is to have your physician submit your scripts through the Internet: http://www.canadianrx.com.  For more information on this, contact me.

Although summertime is for relaxing, the CTCTA will continue to work on universal health care issues as well as providing educational materials for all who request it.  You can reach us at 860-728-0058 or by e-mail: alneshaiken@snet.net
