Universal Health Care Bill Passed By CT Labor Committee

The Connecticut Health Insurance Act (Bill 7030) has been passed by the State Labor and Public Employees Committee. This legislation would provide comprehensive health care insurance for all Connecticut residents. Coverage would include all medically necessary services including prescription drugs, mental health care, rehabilitative, long-term care, home care, and preventive and public health measures. Everyone would have free choice of any licensed health care provider in Connecticut.

Care would be based on need, not on ability to pay. Health care would not be based on employment, and there would be no way to lose your coverage.

The Connecticut Health Care Insurance Act (CHCIA) would create a "single payer" health insurance trust that would be accountable to the people of Connecticut. CHCIA eliminates insurance premiums for all the covered services, and the cost to the average citizen and business would be less than comparable private health insurance. CHCIA would be financed by employee payroll taxes, individual income taxes, and excise taxes on activities detrimental to health (cigarettes, alcohol, air and water pollution.)
